It’s a little hard to believe that October is half over… but the weather doesn’t lie. Leaves are turning, the fog and mist are hanging on longer, and the new Cal Poly students are getting a real taste of what it means to live here in Humboldt on the coast. Meanwhile, inland, you can hang out in weather that’s as warm as any summer day – an entirely different climate just a short drive away. Wherever you are, your pumpkins are ripe and the season of Halloween is upon us everywhere.

Wednesdays and Fridays 10A-1P & Saturdays 10A-3P Ongoing through October 30th. List of all plants available online. Checks or cash preferred, though no change will be on-site. Credit cards accepted. Please bring your own box to transport plants home.
4P Come out and join us for a night of Art on the Arcata Plaza! Businesses are open later, there are featured artists, performers and musicians! Head on over to our website for more information!
5:30-7:30P Join Zane Middle School in celebrating cultures from around the world with vendors with food from Moroccan, Hmong, Mexican, German, Mongolian and Native American cultures for sale. Cultural performances and demonstrations include a Hmong Fashion show, Eureka High School KPOP dance, the Wiyot dancers, Brazilian Capoeira and more.
5:30 – A ribbon cutting ceremony starts off the celebration at 5:30pm, followed by live music from Canary and the Vamp and DJ Marjo Lak in the grand theater ballroom.

7P Dr. Pamela E. Harris, Professor of Mathematics at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will deliver the 78th semi-annual Harry S. Kieval Lecture at Cal Poly Humboldt. The public is welcome to this free lecture, which is geared toward a general audience. The title of the lecture is “How to Choose Your Own Mathematical Adventures”. She will share her journey to research mathematics, what it entails, how she has developed new research ideas, and how she has found her own place within the mathematical community. Room 135 of the Science-B Building on the Cal Poly Humboldt campus.
8P Inspired by silent cinema and the paintings of René Magritte, the show is a physical theater exploration that uses dance, clowning and movement to tell a story of hope and imagination. Featuring Humboldt performer Rudi Galindo and Italian dancer/choreographer Lisa Da Boit.

10A-1P Join NRLT and local civil engineer Conor Shea on a guided hike of Freshwater Farms Reserve. Learn about the property’s history, the wildly successful ecological restoration that’s been completed there, and the community effort to restore the historic barn onsite. This event is appropriate for anyone – from seasoned experts to curious laypeople; there’s plenty to learn and inquire about! Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and be prepared to be outdoors for the length of the event. Part of the tour will involve walking on uneven terrain.

2:30P Elizabeth Connors-Keith from Hypnosis for Health will give a talk entitled “The 3-Step Process to Effectively Reduce Stress”. Elizabeth is a certified hypnotherapist and life coach who has been helping people manage their stress, stop substance abuse, lose weight, eliminate fears, release trauma and create new habits for more than 16 years. She has distilled her knowledge and experience in the area of stress into a process people can follow to become calm and relaxed in healthy ways.

THE PATH TO SEA OTTER REINTRODUCTION IN OREGON
6:30-9P Join Redwood Region Audubon Society for a presentation by Frank Burris of the Elakha Alliance. As a keystone species, sea otters profoundly affect the mix of species around them, including locally breeding seabirds. Burris will discuss Elakha Alliance’s mission to restore a healthy population of sea otters to the Oregon Coast and the research and plans for reintroduction. Follow the link for more details.

CARE CENTERED POLITICS: FROM HOME TO THE PLANET
5-6:30 Dr. Robert Gottlieb will talk about his new book Care-Centered Politics: From Home to the Planet. His book presents a framework for creating a more just and equitable care-centered world. Climate change, pandemic events, systemic racism, and deep inequalities have underscored the centrality of care in our lives. Gottlieb examines how a care economy and care politics can influence and remake health, climate, and environmental policy, as well as the institutions and practices of daily life. Gottlieb is Professor Emeritus of Urban and Environmental Policy at Occidental College.
THE KLAMATH MOUNTAINS: A GEOLOGIC JOURNEY THROUGH TIME
7P Join us for an evening lecture presented by Mark Bailey, The Klamath Mountains: A Geologic Journey Through Time. Mark is one of the authors in the newly published natural history book about the Klamath Mountains and will reveal the formation and geologic complexity of these iconic mountains. Masks are required.
