It’s a holiday weekend, and while Memorial Day is a somber occasion, Humboldt celebrates life by bringing out the Kinetic Glory… There’s plenty to do this weekend, and they grey skies predicted might be doing our kinetic athletes a favor by keeping the weather mild, but it won’t stop Humboldt from getting out and doing our thing.

Friday 5/26
2-4P Join us for a fun afternoon of Arts and Crafts activities for kids ages 4-12. Tour the school, meet the teachers and make a fun project to take home.
REDWOOD COAST SPRING RECITAL AND BBQ
4-7P The Redwood Coast Chorus, led by Sasha Lyth, performs works from its spring repertoire at 6P. Brett Shuler Fine Catering serves grilled oysters and dinner plates with grilled chicken or tofu with romesco sauce, potatoes and salad. Happening at Wrangletown Cider.
6:30-9:30 Come skating at the Roller Rink in Fortuna, Rohner Park. Cost is $5.50, $3.50 ages 5 and under, which includes the skate rental.

31ST ANNUAL NORTH COAST MEN’S GATHERING
5/26-28 The North Coast Men’s Gathering is an annual event and a community of men. The purpose of the gathering is to create a safe place in which men can explore aspects of themselves and their lives, with the unconditional support, compassion and esteem of other men. The gathering is a grass roots experience where men participate in workshops, games, art, and fire circles – At Mattole Camp.
Saturday 5/27
KINETIC GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP DAY ONE
10A The Kinetic Grand Championship is a 3-day, 42-mile bicycle race over land, sand, mud and water. Many refer to the Kinetic Grand Championship as the “Triathlon of the Art World.”
Day 1 of the Kinetic Grand Championship starts on the Plaza in Arcata, California at the noon whistle every Memorial Day weekend. The racers take off to the Manila dunes, where they race through miles of sand to the great and inevitable “Deadman’s Drop”. Then on to Eureka’s downtown gazebo.
REDWOOD HARLEY DAVIDSON 6TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY
10A We are thrilled to announce that Redwood Harley Davidson is celebrating its 6th year anniversary, and we would like to invite you to join us for the festivities! We will be hosting a party with live music, free BBQ, and yard games. It’s our way of saying thank you for your continued support over the years. SOUTHERN HUMBOLDT GUIDED FIELD TRIP
8:30A – Join the Redwood Region Audubon Society for a Southern Humboldt birding walk on Saturday, May 27. This walk includes 2-3 miles of gentle walking through riparian, grassland, and mixed hardwood forests with bird species varying by season. In the winter, white-crowned and golden-crowned sparrows abound and Lincoln’s sparrows, Northern harriers, and Wilson’s snipe might be observed, as well as the year-round residents like jays, towhees, woodpeckers, and several raptor species. Meet at the Tooby Park parking lot in Garberville. This trip occurs on the fourth Saturday of every month, generally starts around 8:30 a.m., and the leaders vary by month.
12-4P Watch the Kinetic Sculpture Race as contestants make their way through the Manila Community Center on their way to the dunes portion of the race. A beer garden, food vendors, bubbles, and live music make this a great, family friendly event!
WINE, WOOD AND FINE ART IN WHITETHORN
1-5P Join us on Memorial Day weekend to enjoy the opening of the new art gallery in Whitethorn Construction, featuring Whitethorn Hardwoods furniture, antique and art collections. Whitethorn Winery will be pouring wine from 1-5 pm both Sat and Sun, with snacks and music with guest winemaker Darren Demore.
8P A pageant of kinetic proportions. Decide who will reign in glory over the Kinetic Grand Championship. Food, music, fun. $15
Sunday 5/28
KINETIC GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP DAY TWO
9A Day 2 starts in Eureka at the waterfront on the Humboldt Bay, where brave Kinetic Pilots race their crafts through the water (most float). Then back on land where kinetic sculptures go up Hookton Hill, a 1 mile-7% incline and decline. Day 2 ends with a private campout for racers and volunteers only.
KINETIC PIT STOP AT EUREKA NATURAL FOODS
11A-1P The Kinetic Grand Championship racers will pit stop at Eureka Natural Foods on Sunday. Join them for lunch and check out their amazing rides! Eureka Natural Foods will have lunch specials and you can take all the photos you want of the racers unique builds.

Monday 5/29
OCEAN RANCH UNIT OF THE EEL RIVER WILDLIFE AREA FIELD TRIP
8A Spend the morning with the Redwood Region Audubon Society exploring the newly restored Ocean Ranch Unit of the Eel River Wildlife Area. We’ll see how well the area is supporting birds that breed in our local estuarine habitats. With luck, we may see Red-necked Phalarope, White-faced Ibis, and/or Purple Martin. Be prepared for 2-3 miles of easy walking. Meet leader Ken Burton at 8:00A at the parking area off Table Bluff Road (40.691833, -124.273462). If you want to carpool to the location, contact Ken ([email protected]) with your address.
10A-1P Parade on Main Street at 10 a.m. followed by Memorial Service at the Ferndale Cemetery.
KINETIC GRAND CHAMPIONSHIP DAY THREE
10:30A Day 3 starts from the private party at Crab Park where they will head over land to cross the Eel River just outside of Fernbridge. Watch the Racers cross the finish line on Ferndale’s historic Mainstreet, where they will park for a while before heading up to the Final Awards Dinner.
Wednesday 5/31
10-11:45A Celebrate World Otter Day and help us welcome our newest permanent exhibit, a beautiful mosaic otter. Crafts, games, prizes, cupcakes, songs, and presentations by the artist and the North Coast Otter Project. Arrive early to get started on the fun, on the Avenue of the Giants between Weott and Myers Flat. Bring your friends and neighbors!
Thursday 6/1
ARCATA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MIXER
5:30-7P Our next mixer will be on June 1st at The Holly Yashi Store in Arcata! There will be food provided by Caps Food Shack! We will be mostly networking outside and will be able to provide a few chairs but if you’ve got one, bring one! As always there will be plateware and utensils by Bright and Green and our reusable cups for drinks! This event is open to the public and great for business networking and learning more about the perks of being a Chamber Member.
