Everyone seems to be a little on edge these days, and the whipping wind, driving rains and unsteady ground certainly don’t help to make one feel calm or settled. 2023 is off to a rambunctious beginning, and Humboldt is staying strong – waiting for a break in the skies to hit the beach, clean up debris, or even to sit outside for a second.

10A-1P – This is our January Pancake Agenda, a fundraising project for our annual Pride! It’s $10 with kids under 6 eating free. We have gluten-free and vegan options! Come have your fill of pancakes, sausages, eggs, juice and coffee while supporting Redwood Pride! Those who sign up early via our website get some extra goodies!This month we’re at the Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Bayside at 24 Fellowship Way.

11A-2P Friends of the Lost Coast is thrilled to announce our first Young FOLC at the Library workshop of the new year. We’ll be meeting up at the Shelter Cove Library before starting our free two-day workshop at 11AM! Saturday will focus on native and medicinal plants and will involve herbalism crafts and activities for the kids. Sunday will focus on seaweed as a superfood and essential link in marine food chains as we explore up close in the tidepools of Shelter Cove. Both days, kids will learn about the topics on hand through stories, crafts and activities! Thanks to our fabulous friend, the Shelter Cove Library, children that attend our Young FOLC at the library workshop will leave with a handmade herbal craft and a brand new book to take home. 1555 Upper Pacific Drive, Whitethorn, CA! SECOND SATURDAY FAMILY ARTS DAY
2P The Humboldt Arts Council is hosting Second Saturday Family Arts Day at the MGMA on Saturday, January 14th at 2:00! This monthly event is always FREE! Families are invited to participate together in this monthly art-making workshop that complements current exhibitions at the Museum. These workshops are geared toward intergenerational learning and creating in a museum setting. Discover the MGMA through fun, educational activities for kids and families! For everyone from beginners to art experts, Second Saturday Family Arts Day offers diverse opportunities for the whole family to view, understand, and interact with the exhibitions and art on view. On January 14th we will be creating mixed media collages inspired by Katie Pasquini Masopust’s art quilt/textile work. Participants are invited to tour the exhibition and gather inspiration for the day’s project. After the tour, please come down to the Youth Classroom to create with assistance and guidance from Genevieve Kjesbu, art educator. All materials will be supplied.

3-5P Christ Church Concert Series is pleased to welcome back concert organist Ken Cowan. 14 years ago Mr. Cowan gave the first concert on the newly installed Kegg pipe organ, receiving a resounding standing ovation after his stellar performance. He is regarded as one of North America’s finest concert organists and maintains a rigorous performing schedule in the U.S. and internationally. His program will include a variety of pieces: from a transcription of Humperdinck’s Prelude to Hansel and Gretel to Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in E minor. A reception follows the concert and CD’s will be for sale.

8A-12N Cal Poly Humboldt students, staff and faculty, and community members are invited to participate in a morning of community service. Volunteer and support our Humboldt community! Community Projects include organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of the Redwoods, Oh Snap! Food Pantry, Jefferson Community Center and the North Coast Regional Land Trust. MLK LEARNING CENTER – MLK DAY CELEBRATION
8:15A-4:30P – HC Black Music and Arts Association welcomes you to the 2nd MLK Learning Center at the Arcata Community Center. The event kicks off at 8:15am with community March from the Arcata Plaza to the Community Center. Join in this opportunity for community restorative healing. Opening ceremony at 9:00 am with African Kemetic Yoga, Gospel Choir, Storytelling by Benjamin Mertz at 11:00am, speakers, live music and dance performances – Seed + Soil, Humboldt Rockers, Lao Dancers – food + craft vendors. African Dance and community drumming circle at 4pm (bring your drums!).

MOVE TO BALLET SERIES FOR SENIORS AND ADULTS OF ALL AGES
10:45-11:45A ONGOING through 2/22. Experience moving with grace while improving posture and alignment. Using the ballet barre you will learn gentle strengthening and coordination exercises for your feet, torso, and arms. Ballet works wonders for the brain-to-body connection. Wear comfortable clothing that gives you freedom of movement with socks and/or ballet shoes. Whether or not you have prior ballet experience, Melissa will guide you with her expert knowledge of this beautiful art form.
12-1:30P The Eureka Woman’s Club will be hosting a program on Wellness and Nutrition for members and the community, at the EWC at 1531 J Street in Eureka. The program begins at 12:30 pm following a brown bag lunch at noon. There is no cost for this short program and all are welcome to attend. The program features Pamela Nance Lee who has a degree in Foods and Nutrition and is a Certified Wellness Coach. She is a certified Yoga instructor and a graduate of a 2-year transformational leadership program called Radical Aliveness.
VINGHAM, BIRDS AND BIRDWATCHING IN INDIA – A LECTURE
7P – Please join Redwood Region Audubon Society for “Vihangam, Birds, and Birdwatching in India” by Karthik Sai. Joining us virtually from India, Mr. Sai is a wildlife researcher, photographer, guide, and conservationist. He goes by “Bird Man” in Tirupati, India where he works as a wildlife consultant to Tirupati Wildlife Management Division and a biologist at Sri Venkateswara National Park. Hot drinks and goodies will be served at 7 p.m. Please come fragrance-free in person to the Six Rivers Masonic Lodge or via Zoom.
CALIFORNIA CONDOR REINTRODUCTION UPDATE
6:45P – Chris West, Manager of the Northern California Condor Restoration Program, will discuss the conservation history of the endangered California condor and provide an update on the Yurok Tribe’s reintroduction of the condor to our region. MOVE TO JAZZ SERIES FOR SENIORS AND ADULTS OF ALL AGES
10:45-11:45 – ONGOING through 2/23. Get your groove on with fun dance moves to warm up your body and soul. While your feet are moving to the beat, enjoy enhancing your physical & mental strength, flexibility, and coordination. You’ll learn combos in a variety of jazz styles. Wear clothing that lets your body move with socks and/or jazz shoes, or ballet shoes. In-person and online.
EMOTEJI: THE YOGA OF MOVEMENT – WINTER MOVEMENT FOR TEENS AND TWEENS
5:30-6:30P ONGOING – Thursdays through 2/17 – This six week, drop-in friendly series provides a supportive space for teens to explore their inner world of expression. Just like an emoji shows a feeling or expression in a text message, our body can show a feeling or expression in a dance or yoga practice. Through movement and favorite playlist songs, we will explore guided movement sequences, freeform dance, yoga postures, and the basics of choreography to co-create a group dance-yoga practice. Experience with dance, yoga, or creative movement is not necessary because this is a space to learn movement basics and create your own movement. Drop ins Welcome!
