Summer is in full swing and Humboldt is here for it. The skies are clear except for some thankfully cool fog, the peaches and tomatoes are nearly ripe and people are still slowly moving out of the Covid cocoon for all of the events happening county-wide. THROUGH 8/6 – TFhe Eureka Street Art Festival will be bringing 11 new murals to the Bridge District – from the 101 corridor on the north side of town to the waterfront. Includes daily art walks at 5:30. Click the link for maps, bios, and COMPLETE details.

ONGOING this weekend AND next – Returning from national and international tours, world-class musicians perform live concerts in this historic, intimate and extraordinary village, leaving you with lasting impressions. Concurrently, various art shows are up throughout town.
8P – A live physical comedy performance inspired by Edward Gorey’s illustrated story of the same name. Created by Dell’Arte alums Kathryn Cesarz and Jesse March. (Running through 8/14)
REDWOOD CURTAIN THEATER – THE CHILDREN
8P – A contemporary comic drama set on the seismically active, tsunami-eroded, albeit beautiful, rural coast of Angelsea, England in the environs of a compromised nuclear power plant. Does that sound a bit like our home? While the world outside is dealing with the aftermath of the disaster at the plant, married couple Hazel and Robin, nuclear physicists who worked at the now-failed plant, are visited by a former colleague who upsets the balance of their already precarious existence with both humourous and far-reaching effects. (Running through 8/20)

Saturday, August 6th
9-10:30A – Join us for a special beautification event down by the bay before the Eureka Street Art Festival Block Party, Saturday, August 6, 2022. The City of Eureka and the PacOut Green Team will gather for our bi-monthly Trash Bash at the Adorni Center parking lot and cleanup along the waterfront trail, through Halvorsen Park, and down to the Samoa Bridge. The cleanup will take place from 9am-10:30am. When you arrive, you will need to sign in and get supplies. We always end with a group photo and raffle. Plus, the Los Bagels FREE breakfast is back! Join us at 8:45am for a complimentary bagel before we get started. Thanks Los Bagels.
10A-2P – Humboldt County Library and Arcata Playhouse invite families and children to a mini festival featuring award-winning singer/songwriter Laura Doherty of Chicago along with fun activities, crafts, giant bubbles, creative dance with Shoshanna, stories with Ms. Sue, Redwood Discovery Museum, The Wonder Wagon, and more! Laura will perform twice. This is a free event! “It really is music for the whole family – full of beauty and fun!” — Wilco drummer, Glenn Kotche. Happening at Creamery Field, Arcata.
10A-4P – “Cooling it in the Redwoods”, the Humbugs VW Car Club 16th Car Show is at Pierson Park in McKinleyville, CA. VWs from several western states will be attending this year’s show. Enter your 1991 or older VW (in any condition) for $20 which includes an optional Humbugs membership. Spectators enter free. Raffle prizes and a silent auction is open to all. No alcohol is permitted at the show.
10:30A-6:30P – The blues festival features all local bands, and is the only fundraiser that the Folklife Society puts on annually. The festival was cancelled the last two years due to Covid restrictions. Gates open at 10:30 A.M. and six acts perform hourly from 11 A.M. until 6:30 P.M. Tickets are $15 general public, $12 for Folklife Society members, $5 for children 12 and under, and can be purchased at the gate, or go to buddybrown.brownpapertickets.com

HUMBOLDT BEER WORKS MEAD MAKING DEMO
11A-12P – Get Ready to Bumble! Come on down to HBW and celebrate Mead Day on Saturday, August 6, 2022. Since 2002, the American Homebrewers Association has organized Mead Day to increase awareness of this sweet fermented beverage and foster camaraderie among meadmakers. HBW Staff will be leading a short “How-To” Demonstration on making mead at home! Make your own honey wine and see what the buzz is all about! Free to anyone 21+!
EUREKA STREET ART FESTIVAL BLOCK PARTY
12-6P – We can’t wait to see you at the Block Party this Saturday from 12-6 under the Samoa Bridge! We’ll have food, music, beer, art + vendors!
12-3P – Meet at the Founders Grove or at mile marker 20.29 on the Avenue of the Giants between to take a leisurely walk through the Mahan Plaque Grove (easy flat trail) and learn about Laura Mahan (1869-1937) from one of the onsite naturalists. Laura was awarded (posthumously) Assembly District 1’s Woman of the Year for 2022 for her tireless advocacy to save the redwoods–even before women had the right to vote! Bring the whole family and learn about our county’s most-famous “shero.”
2P – Tour the exhibitions and get inspiration for the day’s project, then create colorful and otherworldly landscapes based off of Ingrid Nickelsen’s paintings on view. All materials supplied. $5, $2 Seniors

ARCATA LANTERN FLOATING CEREMONY
7:30P – A memorial for all those harmed by the WWII bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to bring awareness to dangers of nuclear proliferation and advocate for peace and environmental sustainability. Gather by Klopp Lake at the end of South I Street for music and community. Lanterns enter water at sunset.

TRINIDAD ROCKS: A JOURNEY THROUGH COASTAL GEOLOGIC HISTORY
10A-12P – Step into a geological time machine with the Trinidad Coastal Land Trust at Trinidad State Beach on August 7th from 10am to noon! Oceanographer and geologist Danny O’Shea will lead us on an in-depth and fascinating journey through the history of our unique rocky Trinidad shoreline. Danny is skilled at helping students of all levels relate to and understand the processes that shape the coast and create the dramatic landscapes we enjoy.
