McKinleyville is an unincorporated area approximately 6 miles north of Arcata. It is bordered on the west by the Mad River, which runs parallel to the Pacific ocean.
McKinleyville is a quickly growing area of Humboldt County, where you can find older homes on larger lots mixed in with newer developments and subdivisions. The central area features grocery stores and eateries and the residential areas stretch out from there. The population of McKinleyville is 17,200 (2019).
On the west side, you’ll find McKinelyville’s most popular feature, which is the Hammond Trail – a long, winding path that takes you through wooded areas, a dog park and along the bluffs of the river overlooking the ocean. The trail connects to Arcata at the south and Clam beach at the north. Many sections of are paved for biking or skating.
If you fly commercially into Humboldt County, you will land in McKinleyville at a small airport which serves the greater area.
McKinleyville offers a quiet, suburban lifestyle, while being relatively close to some of Humboldt’s most majestic beaches – the town of Trinidad is just 8 miles to the north.
