The city of Fortuna sits slightly inland between hills of Redwoods and the Eel River, which winds its way along the southern side of town. Pastures are scattered throughout the city, which features an old town area as well as modern shopping centers. Fortuna is home to 12,200 people (2019).
Known for it’s annual rodeo, community events and small-town feel, Fortuna offers residents many amenities, including hiking trails, a river walk, a variety of dining experiences and slightly warmer weather than the rest of coastal Humboldt.
Fortuna is approximately 17 miles south of the city of Eureka, and the drive between the two is scenic. Along the way, there are smaller communities, CR community college and the Humboldt Bay Wildlife Refuge. Just north of Fortuna is the highway exit to the Victorian Village of Ferndale, and the Bear River Casino.
Fortuna features a weekly Farmer’s Market, many active local businesses, a museum of local history and Rohner Park Forest, full of hiking trails and scenic redwoods, all right in town.
