6-9P Join us for the opening night of “Back to the Land, the Birth of Humboldt County’s Counterculture Ideology” Artist Ingrid Hart, the author of the original “Are you a Humboldt Honey” poster will be speaking along with back to the lander poet, Fran Ransley, filmmaker Claire Weissbluth and Nicole Riggs of HAPA (Humboldt Are People’s Archive). 6-8P McKinleyville Arts Night is a monthly celebration of arts, food & fun in McKinleyville. McKinleyville Arts Night is the third Friday of each month and is open for all businesses to display the work of our local artists. Want more information? (Ok… the fundraising event of the moment 😉) The Sanctuary Donation Dash Yard Sale! We’ve spent 4 days going through so much stuff left over from students moving out of their dorms at Cal Poly Humboldt to keep it out of landfills.
This week we’re spending even more days sorting and organizing to bring you a fantastic assortment of clothing, household items, and some weird *ss stuff.

10A-1P Take your artistic nature observation to the next level with this workshop focused on art outdoors. This is the final workshop of the series where we get to go outdoors and create art! We will learn tips about the art of plein air and field sketching. Participants can enjoy a beautiful day outdoors while gaining inspiration for nature. No experience is necessary. Some materials and snacks provided! Bring a chair or a picnic blanket to sit on. Workshop is geared towards ages 14 and older. Please send us an email or call (707) 444-1397 to sign up.
REDWOOD COAST KITE FESTIVAL AND ARTISAN’S FAIR
10A-5P Our second annual Redwood Coast Kite Festival is planned for May 20 and 21, 2023. In collaborative efforts with Artists and galleries associated with the Ink People, Kites as Art installations are being displayed in Old Town Eureka. The Redwood Coast Kite Festival will be a free public event held along the Humboldt Bay waterfront. Along with the Festival, there will be an Artisans Fair. Please join us for the 2023 Redwood Coast Kite Festival!
11A-3P Is your garden overflowing and you have more plants than you can handle? Are you looking for something new to plant in your yard? Swing by the Humboldt County Library in Eureka and check out the Plant and Seed exchange in our parking lot! Bring whatever extra plants, starts, or seeds you have and take home something new! Please label your plants (we will have labeling materials on hand at the event, in case you forget) and please no invasive species
11A-2P Join us for a FREE and FUN family-friendly day to celebrate all the benefits of bicycling! Los Giles food truck will be there, enjoy pedal-powered music by the Blueberry Hill Boogie Band, and make a bike blender smoothie! Test ride an e-bike! Ride the skills course! 11:30A-3:30P Come celebrate land conservation and watershed protection by lending a hand to remove invasive species and improve critical fish habitat in Jacoby Creek. Join the California Conservation Corps Watershed Stewards Program in Partnership with AmeriCorps and the Jacoby Creek Land Trust, in a family-friendly hands-on watershed restoration volunteer event followed by an afternoon BBQ for participating volunteers. Parking can be found at 24 Fellowship Way in Bayside. Gloves and tools will be provided but volunteers should bring a water bottle, sun protection, and appropriate clothing for working outside.
12-8P KMUD and its sponsors, Vocality Credit Union and Golden Dragon Medicinal Syrup, invite you to kick off the summer season in style at the annual Block Party. This free event, located at the KMUD Studio located at 1144 Redway Drive in Redway, will feature live music, delectable food, luscious libations, the world-famous CD sale, vendors, a kids zone, and live mural painting by artists, Rawzen and Joe Mallory. The impressive music line up includes reggae with Irie Rockerz, Humboldt Cumbia with Makenu, brass band with Samba Da Algeria, our local favorite, the Garbervillans, along with KMUD’s youngest programmer and musician, DJ Tenzin. The afternoon will be kicked off by Soulevity, Tom Lasbury and Emily Totten. While the adults dance and visit with fellow community members, the kids zone will have a lot to offer for the younger crowd including animal balloons and giant bubbles courtesy of the Tea Fairy, and a bouncy house, along with other activities. Our street side vendors section will be filled with local crafts vendors offering up a variety of shopping opportunities for Block Party attendees. Redway Drive will be closed from 8 a.m. until midnight on May 20th as the celebration spills into the street. Come, join your community for a magical day of celebration.

THE ABC KENTE DONNING CEREMONY
2:304P At the Arcata Plaza, HC Black Music and Arts Association will host the 4th African Black Caribbean Kente Donning Ceremony. Each year, high school learners participate in this cultural celebration with the African and Black Ubuntu community. In honor of African heritage, the seniors are presented with a handmade clothe from Africa that represents cultural pride, Black excellence and work integrity. HUMBOLDT SPAY/NEUTER NETWORK’S BEAT THE HEAT BINGO BASH
6-8P Humboldt Spay/Neuter Network’s Beat the Heat Bingo Bash. This first annual event is a beach-themed evening of fun, games, prizes, food/drinks and of course BINGO. Every penny raised from this event will benefit Humboldt Spay/Neuter Network’s Feral Cat Community Fund. Date: Saturday, May 20th. Time: Doors at 5:30, games from 6-8P Tickets $20 per card for all night play. This is a 21 and older event. Tickets can be purchased online at Brown Paper Tickets or at the door. Help support the community cats of Humboldt County. See you there!

PINUPS ON TOUR: OPERATION ARCATA
7P Las Vegas Based Pin-Ups on Tour is coming to Arcata, CA (Arcata Veterans Hall) for a night of Vintage Fun that celebrates the area’s Local Heroes. Doors at 7:00 PM, Show at 8:00 PM. Get dolled up and join these gals for a Vintage Burlesque & Variety Show that supports hospitalized Veterans. The group works to recreate the bawdy fun of vaudevillian theaters so popular across America during and post-WWII. Born in Hollywood In 2015 and now based in fabulous Las Vegas, Pin-Ups on Tour has performed in 47 states, donated over 9000 tickets back to our military heroes, and has been able to entertain close to 5000 Active Duty & Veteran Service Members in our nations VA Hospitals! In these past few years Pin-Ups on Tour has donated over $100,000 in free veteran tickets and monetary donations to non-profits – and the group partners with The Drawing Room Foundation, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to creating community through art.

SOUTHERN HUMBOLDT FLOWER SHOW
1-5P The Southern Humboldt Garden Club hosts its 70th annual flower show extravaganza. This fun filled floral event takes place at Agnes J. Johnson School in Weott. This year’s theme is “Roses and Memories”. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to enter. Adults and kids can enter potted plants, flowers, and arrangements from 8:30 – 10:30A. The show Is from 1:00 – 5:00P. If you want more information or a show book, call Jeanne Johnson at (707) 946-2309. During the judging period you can tour the student garden or spend time in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. including the nearby visitor center. Our opportunity drawing is always a big hit and begins at 4P. Vendor booths, 10A – 5P, will offer garden and yard art, mushrooms logs, handmade items, homemade breads, local jams and jellies, Katie’s hot dogs, and more!
NATIVE PLANT SALE AND GARDEN WORK PARTY
10A-1P Gardening with native plants is easy, lends natural beauty to your garden, and makes pollinators happy! Join Friends of the Lost Coast for a Native Plant Sale and Garden Work Party on Sunday, May 21, from 10a.m. to 1p.m. at the Lost Coast Education Center in Whitethorn. Shop a wide selection of flowering native annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees and grasses, or help out by volunteering in the demonstration garden. Volunteers take home free wildflower seedlings! The Lost Coast Education Center & Native Plant Garden is located near 768 Shelter Cove Road. Look for the sign that says Native Plants!

SECOND HUMBOLDT BOUNSKEE CLASSIC TOURNAMENT
12N- Bounskee is a Humboldt original mini-sport and it’s super fun! Do you have what it takes to be a Bounskee champion? Compete for cash prizes and specially made tournament Bounskees. $25 to compete in the tournament (adults only). This is a free, all-ages event. Contests/activities for the kids. INTRODUCTION TO PERMACULTURE DESIGN
2-4P This lecture and tour will cover the basic principles behind permaculture design and show you real examples of permaculture design in practice. Learn about holistic homestead design, stacking functions, catching and distributing rain/greywater, soil building, nutrient cycling, huglekulture mounds, resource salvage and ecological forest gardening. TRINIDAD HEAD TO ELK HEAD LOOP HIKE
3-5:30P Easy to moderate 4.4 mile hike. Begin the day hiking the 1.7 mile loop up Trinidad head, take in the views, meander down the beach to Mill Creek and then head up the trail to Elk Head. At the halfway point we will share a wine, light snacks and stories. Beginners welcome and encouraged. Please leave your four-legged friends at home.
3-4:30P Local spiritual leaders, choirs and soloists will present an uplifting program of beautiful music and reflections on peace from a variety of faith traditions. Musical offerings will include the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Youth Choir, United Congregational Christian Church Choir, Temple Beth El Choir, and the intergenerational Pitts Family quartet. The program will feature a debut performance of the newly-forming Redwood Community Peace Choir with accompanist Laura Welch. The peace-focused ensemble will perform original music by Rabbi Naomi Steinberg including “Not By Might,” based on famous words of the Prophet Zechariah, and the anthem “Peace On Earth” featuring soprano soloist Fiona Ryder.

8:30A- Empower, Protect and Invest (EPI) and the North Coast Rape Crisis Team (NCRCT) invites service providers, law enforcement and community members alike to come together to gain knowledge and create on-going initiatives to combat the epidemic of Human Trafficking and Commercial Sexual Explotation of Childen. Expert speakers and lived-expirence experts will provide information to fuel practical efforts to combat trafficking in our community. Breakfast and Lunch will be provided.

From jewelry to hanging pieces, she has art around the area and has recently been featured at @sekoya.botanicals beautiful space in Old Town Eureka. She will be setting up shop at HBSC May 24th from 5-8pm. Come out and show your support!

STUDENT BIRD ART CONTEST RECEPTION
During May and June, copies of winning artwork from the 20th annual Student Bird Art Contest–held in conjunction with the Godwit Days festival–will be on display at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center (AMIC). All are invited to attend a free cookies-and-punch reception at AMIC on Friday, May 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. The contest, cosponsored by Friends of the Arcata Marsh (FOAM) and Redwood Region Audubon Society, received 650 entries from K-12 students throughout Humboldt County. Those who received cash prizes–1st- through 3rd-place winners divided into age categories and five best bird in habitat awards–as well as honorable mentions will be included in the exhibition. Shows at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center featuring local art and photography are sponsored by FOAM. The Interpretive Center is located at 569 South G Street in Arcata and is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 9A to 5P For more information, call (707) 826-2359.
