It’s the last week of July and thankfully-mild weather is keeping fire season at bay while also causing a confusing set of wardrobe needs on the coast. Overcast vibes and weirdly premature holiday decorations in shops are leaving some fearing Summer is on it’s way out – but the full scope of activities and summer events are just ramping up, so don’t put away your plans to play yet!

BEAUTY OF THE LOST COAST HIKE: NEEDLE ROCK TO BEAR HARBOR
9A – Join Sanctuary Forest on Saturday, July 30th for the Beauty of the Lost Coast Hike: Needle Rock to Bear Harbor. Hikers will be treated to spectacular views of the rugged coastline, abundant wildlife and plants, and stories about the history of Bear Harbor and the Sinkyone Wilderness. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Sanctuary Forest office, and bring lunch and plenty of water for this six mile round trip hike. RSVPs are required for this hike due to uncertain road repair plans in the works for the road to Needle Rock. (707) 986-1087

The HVFD’s only fundraiser of the year, this outdoor, family friendly event includes craft and food vendors, and live music with BarnFire, Stealhead, Wild Otis, Hill Honey & the Wildcats and more. Support enables the HVFD to purchase medical and fire fighting, equipment & supplies, for incident response. No shaded parking, no dogs, no glass containers and no camping at the Grange allowed. BIKE PARTY TO LA PATRIA RESTAURANT IN FIELDS LANDING
5P – Anyone up for a picturesque bike ride to an intriguing, out-of-the-way restaurant? After riding just 4 miles, sit down for a Saturday Mexican dinner — or just beer and a snack — before heading the 4 miles back. (You’ll of course make it longer if you include riding round trip to the starting point.)Meet at the Hikshari’ Trail North Parking Lot, off of Truesdale Ave. on the south side of the Bayshore Mall. Take the Trail to Herrick Ave., then get onto the wide shoulder of Hwy. 101 for about 3/4 miles. Avoid the highway for about a mile by taking Humboldt Hill Rd. and re-entering at King Salmon Ave. Then exit for the restaurant at Fields Landing.This is the route used by the Kinetic Grand Championship, and it’s fairly safe. However, everyone should have a reliable bike, wear a helmet, be able to ride a straight line, and be comfortable maneuvering according to the same rules as cars (except when riding on shoulders). This is a friendly ride: the pace and grouping will be adjusted so no one needs to ride alone. E-bikes OK! Please read the About section for what to expect on our rides. And please come prepared to fix your or another’s flat tire should one occur!

NORTH COAST JUNIOR LIFEGUARD PROGRAM
8/1 The North Coast Junior Lifeguard program is accepting enrollment for kids ages 7-18 for all sessions in Trinidad. Sessions are 5 consecutive days from 10am-3pm (Dates on flyer). The Junior Lifeguard Program emphasizes teamwork, leadership, and aquatic safety while introducing young people to safe marine and aquatic recreation opportunities. The program is designed to provide water safety education while improving participant’s physical conditioning, their understanding and respect for the environment, for themselves, their parents, and their peers.
